As a world traveler, a beach comber, a prairie wanderer, all paths eventually lead me to the the Okanagan where I now call sunny Penticton my "Home". Educated at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary, Alberta, I have since had the privilege of doing photography assignments as far away as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Japan & Australia to name a few. But upon my return from every overseas odyssey, I feel more connected to my own area, its people and landscape of unrivaled beauty.
In the early 90's, the Central Okanagan area was my stomping ground while I was a newspaper photographer at the Kelowna Daily Courier. Eventually, the desert country called my name and lured me south to Osoyoos where I was asked to be the area's Artist in Residence. This position gave me room to breathe - to explore the hills and valleys, the grasslands and the lake shores of Canada's only "Pocket Desert". By looking for snake dens and flocks of bighorn sheep, I gained an intimate knowledge of "secret spots" which I often use for my photo shoots - even during weddings believe it or not. In case you're wondering - No! I won't take brides into snake pits!.
Now, as a wedding photographer and beekeeper (talk to me later - I'll tell you about it) living in Penticton, I can extend my love of photography and passion for the Okanagan Valley in creative and unusual ways. Follow me on my Blog for images and updates on recent work and loads of information for those planning a wedding in Kelowna and the Okanagan.
Wedding photography is a form of story telling that demands particulars like preparedness, planning, and follow-through. On the other side, it requires things that can't be quantified - like one's love of people, a sense of humour, and anticipation of great moments that can never be repeated.
My goal has always been to create images with staying power. There is little disputing that if a picture makes you smile, it has done its job or if it brings you to tears, it will remain etched in your memory for a long time.
My friends often describe me as one who likes to "Take it to the limit", one who is "bit crazy" and "definitely unusual". I consider all of these things to be truthful compliments. As a bit of a rebel, I tend to skirt the fringes of the "normal" and strive to present thoughts and ideas that are outside the box. At the same time, however, I enjoy working cooperatively - blending my ideas with those of clients, colleagues and friends. I’d consider myself to be a thoughtful person - mindful of others and respectful of differing philosophies.
After studying Fine Arts at the University of Calgary and Commercial Photography at the Alberta College of Art from 1986 to 1989, my career shaped up to blend photojournalism with the arts. I have now been enjoying working as a wedding photographer and a freelance photojournalist for over 20 years in Penticton, Kelowna, the Okanagan Valley, Canada and abroad.
My work has been published in Canadian Geographic (an interview with me) and other award winning publications, and exhibited in art galleries throughout the Okanagan Valley, BC and Canada. For details on awards and accolades, please read the “Awards” section.
My desire to engage people in the creative process of seeing, led me to teach arts and photography workshops in locations throughout Western Canada, including the Centre for Arts and Technology in Kelowna and the Meadowlark Festival in Penticton.
